When Pablo Escobar raced cars

59 920 Näkymät

One of the more notorious individuals in human history was a racing fanatic. His empire allowed him to undertake motorsport activities across the nation of Colombia - although, he wasn't especially amazing...in any capacity

  • He Killed my grandfather. He died because of a bomb Escobar put in bogotá as an attack against the state. I can see how this all sounds quirky and interesting, and as a die-hard fan of F1 I can grant to you that it is; but I am here to ask you a huge favor and it is, PLEASE, never refer to him as nothing more than a murderer, a rapist, and one of the worst things that ever happened to Colombia.

  • Can you do a video on "WTF Happened to Nico Hulkenberg?" Since he doesn't have a seat for 2020 and its unlikely he will get one for 2021, his comeback is fun to talk about. I think now is a perfect time. He had interesting adventures in his junior career. And his time in Formula 1 is worth its own movie. A talking point could be the lack of "something" during his time in F1. Not to mention what he did at Le Mans.

  • As a Colombian viewer, aside from him butchering the names, this is an excellent video. I love how well informed he is and how he exposed all the information. Just for anyone who is wondering, colombians are very present on motorsports, and most of us love F1. As of right now we have quite a few sportscar drivers like Gustavo Yacamán and Oscar Tunjo, and also awesome drivers in American Openwheel racing like Sebastián Saavedra and Gaby Chaves. Furthermore, aside from driving ( you have Tatiana Calderón in F2 although she hasn't performed that well) we have engineers in many series, like my cousin, who is a head engineer for Andretti Autosport, and won with Takuma Sato the Indy 500 back in 2017. And all of this without taking into account our national championships, which provide fairly good racing.

  • There are a lot of complications about the life and place of Escobar in history. But like all ex-smugglers, he liked cars and racing them; not enough to consider himself serious about garnering acclaim in the sport, but enough to indulge in it to the extent his time and safety would allow. He held no pretensions about going any further than he went in racing, so he didn't have to be amazing at it. Londono probably needed $, so Escobar gave him some. For Ecclestone to pretend it was some sort of transgression was idiotic, compared to some financiers who have backed drivers in the history of F1.

  • Believe it or not, drug money was a pretty common thing in racing. Randy Lanier, IMSA GT champion and Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year, funded his career with profits from one of the biggest weed rings in Florida. He also worked with the Whittington brothers (one of whom had won Le Mans), who apparently bought Road Atlanta so they could use one of the straightaways as a runway for weed-smuggling planes. The father-son duo of John Paul Sr. and Jr. were also notorious drug dealers. In fact, John Paul Sr. was… well, let’s just say he was a character and a half…

  • Not so funny fact: it's well known he "bought" a Copa Libertadores (the South American equivalent of the UEFA Champions League) to his local football club in Medellin in 1989 by bribing and threatening the referees of both the semis and finals. The ones from the semis gave in easily to the pressure but the ones from the finals resisted and even punched the guy who came with a suitcase full of money to bribe and threaten them. The main referee got kidnapped after the game even after Escobar's team won and there are pictures of Escobar celebrating with the team and cup afterwards. Definitively had his fingers in more than one pie.

    • @MafiousBJ i'm just saying that because only colombians get shit but for example Videla favored heavily the pincharratas, but because Escobar it's flashy we get the Bad rep

      Simón MartinezSimón MartinezUukausi sitten
    • @Simón Martinez saying "everybody else did it so it wasn't that bad" is a kindergarden level excuse. And hey i'm Argentinian and my country won a World Cup during a military regime....guess what people think of that 6-0 game against Peru ^^ (they are probably right). In the end when powerful or crooked people meddle in sports it just becomes muddy for everyone involved, whether you won fairly or not. Sports should be free from that kind of power struggles/politics etc

      MafiousBJMafiousBJUukausi sitten
    • @MafiousBJ it's not like other teams in other parts of south america where supported by good people, libertadores it's not a cake walk

      Simón MartinezSimón MartinezUukausi sitten
    • @Simón Martinez it was played in Bogota because Medellin was a powder cake at the time (too many assasinations). I mean even if he didn't directly threaten or bribe officials (which the referees said he did), giving "dirty" money to players to entice them to play better isn't fair play either ^^

  • The mentioned Ricardo Mejía track was inaugured in 1971with two F2 races with the participation of the likes of Hill, Bell, Pescarolo, Siffert and Stommelen. The track was up to F1 spec for the time, but afterwards it devoted solely for local competition and less than a decade later, after a long legal process regarding a stupid penalty to a driver that drove investors away, it was sold off in pieces and tore down. 16 years ago I lived across the street and when crossing a pedestrian bridge you could still see part of a corner. As for Londoño, he kept mingling with shady people, having several properties impounded by the government and eventually being murdered in 2008.
