  • So since his car broke down before he reached the start line, wouldn't this technically be a Did Not Start rather than a Did Not Finish?

  • For the record Tenzig Norgay wasn’t a slave. He and Hillary were a team and he turned down the offer to be the first man on top of the world.

  • In terms of cost/benefit the unfortunate record holder would have to be Riccardo Paletti. After several failed attempts to qualify, in his first GP start he ran 7 laps before retiring far off the pace. In his second start at Canada in 1982 he crashed into the back of Didier Pironi's stalled car on the starting grid and was killed.

  • Lola driver Vincenso Sospiris career was shorter. He had competed in 1 qualifying in 1997, but the team couldn't make it to the race. So Sospiri couldn't even start at one gp. Next race Lola retired from F1

  • Another honorable mention: Hans Heyer. He managed to get a DNF, a DNS, AND a DNQ all in one race. Now that‘s quite the achievement.

  • Another contender is Alfedo Piàn. He entered Monaco 1950, got injured in practice, and never raced again. (He did fully recover, it was just the end of his career).

  • Ernst Loof was an important part of the design team of the BMW 328, which is a very important car in post-war Germany.

  • 1953 German GP was not a Formula 1 race - it was formula 2 race, like all other european World Championship races

    Bartłomiej CzerwińskiBartłomiej Czerwiński10 kuukautta sitten
    • @Bartłomiej CzerwińskiWhy so pedantic? Yeah back then it was called the World Championship for Drivers, now known as FIA Formula 1 World Championship.

      Ulz XCIIUlz XCII9 kuukautta sitten
    • @Ulz XCII there was no "F1 world championship", as known since 1981. This race was part of "Drivers world championship"

      Bartłomiej CzerwińskiBartłomiej Czerwiński9 kuukautta sitten
    • Well the technical rules were F2 rules, but it was still an F1 race.

  • Actually I'm interested in your source on this one, because I looked at the Wikipedia pages for Loof and the other guy (800 metre career) and, at least at the time I looked at it, the edits came out of nowhere. There are other sources that confirm that he retired on lap 1 of that grand prix and never raced again, but I can't find any sources for the 6 feet figure
